Help for fish. I have a pond with a small fountain which I originally installed for the sound of the fountain.?

It was pleasing, but then my husband brought home some pretty fish, and now the fountain must run to aerate the water. I had wanted to turn off the fountain for the winter as I put the garden to bed, but do the fish need aeration all winter, or will they go dormant as the temperature of the water drops, thus permitting me to turn off the fountain and stop feeding them?

your best bet is to buy a tank and bring the fish indoors for the winter. This way you know your fish are fine, and you don’t have to worry about your fountain being damaged by running in the cold weather.

The fish become dormant over winter and stay at the bottom of the pond where the water is slightly warmer… best advice is to turn off the fountain so the temperature layers don’t get mixed,
if the pond freezes over for a good few days melt a hole in the ice (don’t break it as that causes shock waves which can harm or kill the fish)

you need to get a heater to keep the pond from freezing
